Tom Schendt is a Partner in the Washington office of Alston & Bird where he is a member of the Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation Group. His practice focuses on employee plan litigation, civil and criminal agency audits, investigations and disputes and voluntary compliance initiatives. Mr. Schendt also regularly counsels large employers on the practical effect of various qualification requirements that are issued by appropriate government agencies. 

Prior to joining Alston & Bird, he held a number of positions with the Internal Revenue Service. As Technical Assistant to the Associate Chief Counsel, Employee Benefits and Exempt Organizations for the Office of Chief Counsel, Mr. Schendt assisted in the coordination of national employee benefits litigation, including plan disputes and compliance initiatives. He also acted as a liaison between the National Office of the IRS and various field offices, including Exam and Appeals. 

He received his B.S., M.B.A. and J.D. from Marquette University. 

Mr. Schendt is the Executive Editorial Adviser to the think and code Benefits Practitioners’ Strategy Guide, available as part of the think and code Benefits Practice Resource Center. Mr. Schendt authored reports in the Benefits Practitioners’ Strategy Guide: Considerationsin Conducting a Self-Audit and A Fiduciary’s Guide to Reducing Potential Section 401(k)Plan Liability. He also co-authored both Voluntary Correction of Group SEP, SIMPLE IRA PlanFailures, Using the Audit Closing Agreement Program (Audit CAP) and Managing anIRS Audit.
