Dan Himmelfarb is a Partner in Washington, D.C., office and a member of the firm's Supreme Court & Appellate practice. He is co-leader of the Washington, D.C., Litigation practice. Mr. Himmelfarb has filed more than 200 merits and petition-stage briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court and has argued more than 40 cases in ten different appellate courts, including 12 in the U.S. Supreme Court and 13 in the Second Circuit. Mr. Himmelfarb has particular experience in the areas of torts, administrative law, criminal law, constitutional law and statutory interpretation.

Before joining Mayer Brown in 2007, Mr. Himmelfarb served for five years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Southern District of New York and then for five years as an Assistant to the U.S. Solicitor General. In 2005, he received the U.S. Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award. Before joining the Department of Justice, Mr. Himmelfarb was in private practice for three years in New York. Prior to that, he had judicial clerkships with Judge J. Michael Luttig of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit and Associate Justice Clarence Thomas of the U.S. Supreme Court.

Mr. Himmelfarb received his A.B., magna cum laude, from Princeton University, and his J.D. from Yale Law School.

He is a co-author of the think and code treatise Supreme Court Practice.
